The Irvington Historical Society will host its second annual house tour "Great Adaptations" on Saturday, May 19th. As the title implies, while many of the original Irvington estates of the Gilded Age of the early nineteenth century are gone, the outbuildings, barns, and carriage houses remain.

Many retain the spirit of their former lives and will be the highlight of this year's tour. Because of these former lives, the converted buildings share an intimate sense of connection with the history of the great homes they serviced and, once inside, there is a certain presence felt in the details which remain.

Part of the excitement of these adapted dwellings lies in the diversity of the buildings and the inventiveness and ability of the homeowners to create a conversion that is cohesive in its new function as a home while respectful to its heritage. Architecturally, these old buildings now transformed into residences, are often in juxtaposition to newer homes and other structures built around them by succeeding generations.

In addition to the afternoon tour, the Irvington Historical Society will host an evening reception at the home of Kathie and Bob Mackie. Built on the site of the original Tiffany house, with its panoramic Hudson River views, an auction and light supper will be included. All proceeds will benefit the maintenance and affiliated programs of the Irvington History Center.
