27-6 Loss Against Rye Garnets
Sleepy Hollow’s varsity football season kicked off on the 9th anniversary of the September 11 attack on the twin towers of the World Trade Center. The weather was very much akin to the day of the attack in 2001, with a bright blue sky, plenty of sun and a constant breeze. Football was in the air and so was the remembrance that will not, and should not, ever be forgotten. A moment of silent observance was offered by all present who stood to pay their respect for all those who lost their lives on 9/11/2001.
Rye, a perennial powerhouse on the playing field, reinforced that fact as the game progressed. Credit has to be given to the defense of Sleepy Hollow that made a game of it in the first half and early in the second. The deciding factor – actually there were two of them – were kick returns; Rye ran straight through the Horsemen for touchdowns. Sleepy Hollow ground out a running game and scored once, then attempted a two-point conversion that never made it across the goal line.
As the game progressed a number of Sleepy Hollow players needed assistance from their trainer and injury timeouts were frequent. The game clock wound down and it was apparent that Rye was physically strong and executed its offense and defense play consistently.
Sleepy Hollow played with determination and never caved in. At the final whistle, local fans appreciated the Horsemen’s efforts and remembered there’s always next week.
