School Grounds Getting a Makeover

Morse School, Sleepy HollowThe stretch of Beekman Avenue that borders the Morse School between North Washington and Pocantico Streets in Sleepy Hollow is getting a whole new look for the fall thanks to a perfect storm of timing, aspiration, and opportunity.  The project initially sprouted to life due to the work of the Sleepy Hollow Downtown Revitalization Corporation (SHDRC), a non-profit organization founded in 2006 to help in the revitalization of downtown Sleepy Hollow. They had a $25,000 grant to go towards beautification of the downtown area, and came up with the idea of putting it towards the Morse park and playground currently adjacent to the street.

Pomp & Principals - Irvington

Scott MosenthalDear Class of 2010 Irvington Graduates and Parents,

Robert Bonvento, the publisher of the River Journal, has asked me and Carol Conklin, the principal of Sleepy Hollow High School, to share some thoughts from our respective perspectives on our impressions of each of our senior classes—some reminiscing, some future challenges we see headed your way, some advice. We have also been asked to avoid any of the typical hoary clichés or boilerplate so often found in these types of addresses.

Pomp & Principals - Sleepy Hollow

Sleepy Hollow High School Principal Carol ConklinDear Class of 2010,

You are certainly a memorable group!  From your first day of high school you have impressed us with your creativity, challenged us with your energy, and dazzled us with your spirit.   I have been privileged to hear you sing and play your instruments, to cheer from the sidelines of your games when you show opponents what it really means to be a Horseman.  I have observed you learning with your teachers how to solve problems, conduct experiments, debate current events, craft essays, speak new languages, produce films and create images to express your deepest thoughts.  I have watched you pull together as a class to demonstrate that you care about one another, our school community, our nation and our planet.   A force to be reckoned with, you have set a high bar for those who follow.

Heidy Suero, Sleepy Hollow High School

I’m going to The College of Mount Saint Vincent in August 2010. My plans are to have two careers; I want to become an eye doctor and a math teacher. I don’t think I’m ever going to change my mind about these two careers because I’ve wanted to be an eye doctor and a math teacher since before I was a sophomore.

In the Spring of 2010, English teacher Anthony Baxter had 12th grade English students reflect on their high school experiences and what they looked forward to in the future.

I’m interested in becoming a secondary math teacher because I love math; it is my favorite subject and I love numbers. A high school math teacher tends to specialize in types of math, such as algebra, geometry, calculus or trigonometry. I’ve liked math since I was very little.

Jenny Yanqui Sleepy Hollow High SchoolDuring my four years at school I have achieved many things. When I look back at everything that I have left behind I see that it was worth it. Every day of my life I have tried my best at school. During these years at Sleepy Hollow High School I have learned a lot of things, and at the same time, I have enjoyed experiences that have helped shape me into the person I am today.

In the Spring of 2010, English teacher Anthony Baxter had 12th grade English students reflect on their high school experiences and what they looked forward to in the future.

I’m an Ecuadorian girl who came to the U.S three years ago. I spoke no English. This difficult language was one of the factors that had an impact on me while I was at school.  Every day I tried to work harder in order to learn this language. I am proud of the progress I have made in mastering this difficult language in such a short time. I have worked hard and achieved high grades. My record shows that I am determined to overcome obstacles and to reach for perfection. Sometimes working in a different language took me more time, but I was always willing to spend however much time it took to achieve excellence.

Sleepy Hollow High School Onyebuchi AnuforoNow my senior year is here and I just can’t wait to graduate. I feel as if I have grown over the past couple of years and every step I take helps me become more responsible. I have become more outgoing and more active with myself and what I want to do in life.

In the Spring of 2010, English teacher Anthony Baxter had 12th grade English students reflect on their high school experiences and what they looked forward to in the future.

It’s hard to just think about where you’ll be in the next five years because you never know what will happen. All you can do is hope that you are at the place you want to be. As far as I know, I will be in college next year. I will be attending John Jay College of Criminal Justice. I will be majoring in criminal justice. I’m going to take what I learned at an internship that I did during school at a public defender’s office and a legal service internship that I will be doing in the summer in Yonkers. I really don’t know why I want to do criminal justice, but I think the reason is because I just like how things work.

Oquidea RamirezThis year, my senior year, I think this is the moment I have been waiting for my whole life. This year has been so great and yet has gone by so fast. I can’t believe I’ll be graduating in less than a month. It feels like just yesterday I was in pre-school and now I am so close to the finish line. I have done very well this year, my grades are great, the teachers are amazing and my friends are by my side.

In the Spring of 2010, English teacher Anthony Baxter had 12th grade English students reflect on their high school experiences and what they looked forward to in the future.

But one thing I will always remember is what one of my teachers told me back in my first year of high school.  He said to me, “Look around you, maybe one of the friends you started with, will be with you at the end.” I can honestly say this is true.

Stephen Hart, Sleepy Hollow High School

The last four years of my life I have had many experiences, from being a freshman and not knowing what to do, to becoming a senior and trying to be a good role model for the younger students to look up to. My sophomore year was my coming out year; it was the first year that I did a varsity sport. I was on the 2007 Sleepy Hollow varsity football team; for the first time I felt like I wasn’t going to get playing time for the whole year but with the talent on that team we were able to blow the other teams out and I was able to get playing time in all of the games except for two – the first Rye game and the rematch for the section title.

In the Spring of 2010, English teacher Anthony Baxter had 12th grade English students reflect on their high school experiences and what they looked forward to in the future.

Last year was the first time that I did varsity wrestling.  At the beginning of the season, the other wrestlers thought that I was going to quit in the first two weeks but I was dedicated to prove them wrong, and when it was all done, they were impressed and I learned a lot about myself.  I didn’t have anyone else to protect me; I had to “man up” and fend for myself.  That year I had a 5-3 record.
