New Center for Sleepy Hollow Senior Citizens

Monday, October 22, was a wonderful day for the Sleepy Hollow (formerly North Tarrytown) Senior Citizens. Over 100 Seniors witnessed the ribbon cutting ceremony of Phase One of the new Sleepy Hollow Senior Center located at 55 Elm Street.

The Center will be adjoining Barnhart park which also is seeing some improvement. It overlooks the "Marsh" and the former General Motors plant property and has a marvelous view of the Hudson River.

The North Tarrytown Senior Citizen group was established in 1975 by Mayor James Galgano who, at the urging of Sylvia Freyler, created the club. Mrs. Freyler was the first President and meetings were held at Holy Cross Hall on Beekman Avenue the first and third Mondays of each month.

The Phase One portion of the center was donated by the Ginsburg Development Company — the developer of Ichabod's Landing at the bottom of Beekman Avenue. They also donated $20,000 to help renovate the building after it was moved from River Street. The Village has begun Phase Two and is seeking state, federal and private monies to complete it. Phase Two will add approximately 6,000 square feet to the Center.

There are approximately 200 members of which 25 are homebound or in nursing homes. On meeting days some 100-110 members enjoy socializing and meeting with their neighbors. Members have to be 60 years of age and be residents of the Village of Sleepy Hollow.

Anyone interested in joining may call Irene Amato at (914) 631-7482.
